Social Studies: Live Aid

こんにちは! This week in Social Studies I've finished the last unit of our Music through time lessons.
The last unit was Live Aid.

Information about Live Aid:
Live Aid was a concert held in Wembly Stadium in London and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. It was organised by Bob Geldof and Ultravox vocalist Midge Ure. The concert had an estimated 1.5 billion television viewers and raised millions of dollars for famine relief in Ethiopia. It occurred on July 13, 1985.

Live Aid song I chose: Let it be by Paul Mccartney

Lyrics:

Why you think the artist used this song for their performance?
I think the artist used this song to share the idea of wisdom, peace and hope and it is quite catchy.
In the part...
And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

You can tell those lyrics are talking about hope how there is still a chance and there will be the answer to all of our problems I suppose.

Is this a form of Protest? - Explain
I think this song isn't a form of protest. It does not mention how we should claim the rights the Ethiopian famine deserve. It is more of a peaceful encouraging song about hope. However, it could be considered as a peaceful protest, encouraging people to not give and there will be an answer.

Do you think one person could start a similar concert in 2020? Explain your reasoning.
(Live Aid took 10 weeks to organise)
The answer is yes and no. Yes because I think one person could start a concert and influence the others as we can tell how easy it is for other people to join in. And No, because one person isn't enough to start a whole big concert like that. It takes about 10-20 people to prepare all of the things for the concert like the sound system, stage designs, tickets, reception etc. Basically just common sense. Not to mention the money of how much it would cost to rent a stadium. However, anything is possible for a willing mind.

Include a video link to your favourite song from either Wembley or Philadelphia.
I don't have a particular favourite song from Live Aid. But if I have to choose one it would be this one.

How significant are music and musicians today in affecting change in the world (include examples)
I think they affect today's worlds and are significant because they can heal an emotional wound and change the mood. For example, BTS's fans claim that their songs cured their depression, insecurities and broken hearts through their songs. Here's a link to read about it. It is fascinating how music could impact today's society.
