Fun summer learning journey! day 1 activity 1

Maui and the giant fish

Hello guys!, this was my first time doing a summer learning journey activity, so my experience was good and fun, so today was my first post about the summer learning journey day 1 activity, and I'm hoping that you will enjoy it!. My first activity was to find three interesting facts about Maui and the giant fish story. Here's the link to the story of a man called Maui and the giant fish.
Here's my three interesting facts:
1. Maui was not just ordinary fisher man, he is a great fisher man.
2. Maui was a great fisher man than his brothers.
3. And most of all, Maui has a great attitude, he is not like his greedy brothers.
What I have learned in this story:
I learned that, if you think you can't reach your dream, don't give up and after the sacrifice that you did, at the end your dream will come true, like what they say difficult roads leads to a beautiful destination.
I hope you guys learned something in my blog post and I hope you enjoyed it.

  2. Kia Ora Elisha,

I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed doing your first Summer Learning Journey activity! That was a great idea to include the link to the story in case other people haven't read it. Have you read any other stories about Maui? My favourite story about Maui is the one about him slowing the sun.

You have found three great facts about Maui. I can see that you took a lot out of the story; I liked that you included a moral at the end. I think we should all try to be more like Maui, than like his brothers. Would you agree?

I hope that you enjoy the rest of the Summer Learning Journey activities as much as you enjoyed this one!

  5. Hey Elisha,

Happy New Year! I hope you are spending a lovely holiday with your family and friends.

First of all, well done for posting your first ever Summer Learning Journey activity blog, this shows that you have been learning even outside the school - which is pretty awesome!

It's very true that Maui's brothers were mean and nasty to Maui. Did you know he has a sister? What do you think her personality might be like? I wish she would be kind and caring unlike Maui's other brothers.

I really love how you have written something that you've learnt from reading this story. I especially like the phrase "Difficult roads leads to a beautiful destination" and I've literally experienced this on my journey to KareKare Falls. The roads to the falls were unsurfaced and very dangerous, but when I got to the end, I was greeted by beautiful nature.

I look forward to hear back from you and reading more of your activity blogs!
    Have a great day,

    Jade C.

  6. Kia Ora Elisha-Mae,

I’m Dani, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I normally comment on blogs in the Kaikohekohe cluster ( Northland) but I have been lucky enough to get the chance to visit some blogs in the Uru Manuka cluster!

It’s great to see that you have completed the first activity for the Summer Learning Journey. Like both Hazel and Jade C, I love how you have included what you have learnt from the story. It really made me think about the myth and the journey that Maui went through. It is great to see that someone with a great attitude and resilience has become a hero in many Polynesian cultures.

If you wanted to have a go at some more Summer Learning Journey activities you can copy and paste this link into your browser.

You don’t have to complete all of them. But you can complete whichever ones you like!

I look forward to reading more of your blogs soon!
