Science: Refraction of light

Hello! This last week of Term 2 in Hurumanu 5, we did an experiment about how refraction light works. Refraction light is like where it sorts of zoomed up when in water like for example for the straw. It sort of bends in two when it's viewed in a glass filled with water.

Investigating Refraction - Bending Light

Aim: To investigate how light is affected by changing the substance it is traveling through.

Equipment: Ray box, power source, glass or perspex block, single-slit ray slide.

Method:

1) Collect the equipment from your teacher, and set them up to produce a single beam of light.
2) Place the glass block in the shaded area below
3) PLace the ray box at the top of the page and shine the beam so it travels along the 10° line to the centre of the protractor (this is your angle of incidence, °i).

Results:

Part A: Going from Air to Glass

Cupcakes - Home Economics (Finale)

Hi! This week in cooking we baked cupcakes. It is our final week before we moved on to the next semester. For those reasons, we are being assessed by cooking on our own as a group to our specific recipe. My group was almost the same as usual but we have another person added to our group. We did the planning on Tuesday on who's gonna do which method.

We were given a cupcake recipe for my group and for the others I think it was something like Anzac biscuits etc. To be more specific, my group had a Vanilla cupcake with plain frosting. As you probably may or may not know, I've done cupcakes before in Home Economics. The methods were completely the same. Here's a link to my other blog post on how to make it you haven't seen it yet. LINK

In my group, there were 5 people and they are Vann, Lars, Janel, Minseo and myself. Here's a picture of what the methods were:

Here's who's who were doing each method:
Vann - Vanilla Essence, Baking Powder - Method 3 - Method 10
Lars - Butter, Milk - Method 1 - Method 6 -
Elisha Mae - Sugar - Method 2 - Method 8
Janel - Plain Flour - Method 4 - Method 7 - Method 11
Minseo - Eggs - Method 5 - Method 9

Vann: Will get the 1 t Vanilla Essence and 2 t Baking Powder. He will also do both methods 3 and 10.

Lars: Will get the butter and the milk. He will also do both method 1 and 6.

Elisha Mae: Will get the sugar, she will do method 2 and 8.

Janel: Will get the plain flour, she will do methods 4, 7, and 11. She will also help Minseo with the folding.

Minseo: Will get the eggs and do method 5 as well as method 9 with Janel’s help.

Estimated time is 30 minutes

In my opinion, honestly, our group was kinda chaotic and unclear. We would sometimes joke around etc
but we could also focus on some stuff. Some people like me were just on the side while others
do most of the work. I was not participating on everything because I'm scared at the fact that I might
get something wrong with the recipe/method. Like I said, I only picked it because I wanna try baking.
However, there are some room of improvement.

In our task, we are also asked to let someone taste the final product and record their comments about it. I gave mine to my mom and this is the rough translation she said. "The texture was a bit crispy but the flavoring is okay". I honestly relate to my mom about it. The texture was indeed crispy-ish. We kinda failed again at the creaming the butter part yet again. It had some lumps on the butter when the egg + vanilla essence.

Maybe it was maybe at the part where we were really unsure what to do with the 2 eggs. We started with one egg and mixed it with the creamed-butter+sugar+vannilla essence. It didn't really work very well and it ended up some lumps and the other egg didn't make a difference either. Well, maybe it made it worse because we beat that other egg instead which is unclever of us.

Maybe next time we'll both beat in the eggs and not just one.

What we could do next time is to ask the teacher if unsure or read carefully the recipe next time. Overall I think it was okay. It turned out okay except for the part where the cupcakes looked like it's a basic muffin instead. But the frosting I think mostly covered it so it doesn't look like it.

Bye have a nice day!~

Poster Facts - Hurumanu 6

Hello! Here's another second activity relating to Heroes and Villain in Power to the People which is Hurumanu 6. This is a second poster about Kim Jong-un but this time we have to pick at least 5 events from our timeline and create a poster about it. Here's mine :)
Here's another poster with no words.

Kim Jong-un Poster - Hurumanu 6

Hi! In Hurumanu 6, we moved on to Activity 2 which is to create a political poster of your chosen villain/heroes from the list. I'm still gonna do Kim Jong-un so here's a political poster about him and a quote underneath as well. I hope you like it.

Cow Eye Dissection - Hurumanu 5

Today in Hurumanu 5 last week, we began learning all about the parts of the eye. Such as Iris, Pupil, Cornea, Lens, Optic Nerve, and Retina. Today, we did an experiment and that is to the direction of Cow's eye.

Aim: Dissect a Cow's eye.

Equipment:
- Cow's preserved Eye
- Dissecting scissors
- Gloves (optional)
- Newspaper
- Twicers

Before doing the experiment, you might wanna wear some gloves but that's totally optional. Also, make sure to put a newspaper across the table so it would not make a mess on the table.

Method:
1) Then we take a preserve cow's eye. Get your dissecting scissors and cut off any exes fat around the Cow's eye.

2) Poke the corner of the eye and proceed to cut the whole Cornea. Be careful because the humour fluid inside would burst out. It should look something like this when you cut it off:

3) Next, emptied the eye and you should soon see the lens. A translucent squishy/sticky thing. If you take out the lens you will see the whole thing inside of the eye.

4) After that, cut off the whole thing in half and you should see some sort of colour blue inside.

Findings:
I and my team find it difficult to puncture the eye because it's squishy and slippery so we had to ask for some help. I find it oddly satisfying while doing the experiment.

Conclusion:
Overall I think it was an odd experiment. It was sort of disgusting though but yeah it was an odd way of learning from the parts of the eyes visually.

Plot Story - Arts Kete

In Arts Kete, we began to plan the plot of our own story. We also started building up our characters that we are gonna use in our comic stories. In my case, my story is a bit complicated, but here's a brief explanation of my story plot.

Credits to the rightful owner.
Basically, this is about some fictional character named Chi who is constantly getting bullied for having probably the only person that has glasses. This might seems odd but in her non-existent fictional world, having glasses is considered weird and odd. Devastated she feels, one day she decided to take off her glasses which her parents warned her not to do so because unusual might happen.

Little did she know, a magical adventure was waiting for her. In this story, it involves a cat and a bear who are some side characters that help her throughout her journey. If you probably might have noticed already, the genre of my story is fantasy, adventure, and fictional. It is also inspired by an amazing anime movie called 'A Whiskey Away'. It's a lovely cute anime film that inspires me.

Have a lovely day =)

Heroes VS Villains Timeline - Hurumanu 6

In Hurumanu 6, we began learning about different types of leaders that made an impact on history. They could be either Villains or Heroes. We had a bunch of lists to choose from and I chose Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-un is the current supreme leader dictator of North Korea.

He is the successor of his father Kim Jong-il who was a former leader of North Korea. Apparently, I think he is a villain due to the dictatorship type of government they run under North Korean citizens. Anyways, after we research them, we put all the info into a timeline.

Here is my timeline I hope you like it!

Unwanted Visitors

Hello, This week in Wananga we are doing a new activity. It's a reading-related activity. We had to choose an article from the slide-grid. Soon, if we finish reading it we are choosing an activity off the slide-grid. Anyways, there are some levels the book is labeled of easy, medium, and hard. I choose an easy level book for a start. It's called 'Unwanted Visitors'.

This is basically an article about how unique New Zealand is and it is also precious and fragile so the Biosecurity is strict in order to protect this fragile country filled with species and plants that could be damageable.

I chose an activity which required to make an alternate cover of the article/book that you've read using Canva. Canva is a handy fancy digital tool that you can use to make posters, timelines, etc. Here's the finished product of my poster. I hope you like it!

Pikelets - Home Economics

This week in Home Economics, we cooked Pikelets. You may or may not heard of it but it's basically just a smaller size of a regular pancake. However, there are some differences between the two. The batter for Pikelet is a bit thicker while for Pancake it is flat and soft. Most of the time Pikelets are cooked with Yeast but not always though. For our case in Home Economics, we used Baking powder instead of Yeast. Anyways, here are some steps on how to make your own.

Tasting Evaluations:
For me, I can't really taste the difference between regular pancakes, to be honest. But what stands out the most is the thick texture of it yet soft. It also has a very plain flavour. It'd be good if we could add some savoury toppings such as honey syrup. But other than that, It wasn't too plain. Just the type of flavour I'd like.

However, due to the time limit, we had to hurry and cook the other pikelets as well. We were focusing to make one pikelet perfect because as they say, the greater the visual, the better people would be enthusiastic about eating them. We were carried away that we had some trouble with the time. So we sort of rushed the whole thing.

As you could see not all the pancakes look appetizing at all. But it turned out okay at the end.
Not too bad I guess. =) Thank you for reading my post!

Who invented Basketball?

Hello! This week in PE Hurumanu 7 we've been exploring some unpredictable sports. On Tuesday we did some sports stacking and a little game of Bench ball. Today (Thursday session) we did some Basketball and practices each skill that is essential like dribbling, passing, etc. We are also tasked to do a little research about who invented the game basketball. Anyways here we go.

The man who invented the game basketball is James Naismith. James Naismith is an American-Canadian educator/ sports coach and innovator. He got the idea of making basketball because they needed a sport that can be played indoors because it's freezing outside because it's Winter.

The game was first used in 1891 at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Comic Strips - Kete Arts

Kamusta! This week we are starting again the Kete Arts after it was postponed from lockdown. Today we mostly focussed on catching on the same page since when this started, some people we're not there. Anyways, we started doing our own comic on a cool website called 'Pixton'.

It was new to most of us so we ended up doing the first half of it browsing through the website and how to use a specific thing. It was sort of challenging and exciting. I know for a fact for me, I'm into Anime and comic stuff, so It's pretty fun for me.

We also spend a little bit of the time customizing our own character. Here's how mine turned out.
I hope you like it!
My character

I'm not sure about the plot of my comic story yet but here's what I've come up so far:

We did some research about these four women and they are Kate Sheppard, Jacinda Ardern, Mother Teresa, and Dame Whina Cooper. Here's a little bit more about them and why they are known for. I hope you like it! Bye!

Chocolate Chip Cookies - Home Economics

Konnichiwa! This week in Home Economics we baked some Chocolate chip cookies this time.

I say the whole process went okay but still had some downs. As always, I'm on the same team. We were given the sort of a different layout recipe sheet. It used to be the kind of a layout where it's all written like for example; step 1, step 2, etc. It was in a paragraph instead.

It didn't really explain the steps in much detail like for example, how many minutes we should melt the butter in the microwave. We tried to melt it for like 30 seconds but it didn't do much work on the butter. But It's okay, we were supposed to cream it anyway. Anyways before I spoiled all the methods on how to make your own Chocolate chip cookie.

Tasting evaluations:
(Me and my team's finish product)

Firstly, what stands out the most is the Sugary flavour. It was extremely sweet and honeyed-like. Especially, there was a flavour of Chocolate chips so it made it more sweetener that might cause sugar-rush. But the texture of the cookie was neutral. It was chewie and soft at the same time, which is unusual.

But after it was cooled for a few minutes, It was all crunchy. I'd rate it 4/10 because I'm not really a fan of sweet foods such as candy, chocolates, etc. Maybe next time, what we could do is to reduce the amount of sugar maybe, if it doesn't ruin the recipe. But otherwise, I say It's not too bad at all.

Thank you for reading! BYE

Juggling and Tennis Table - PE Hurumanu 7

Hi, for the past 3 weeks in PE Hururmanu 7, we have been learning how to Juggle and play Table Tennis. Juggling was challenging for me. I didn't really know how to juggle that much and I always kept on failing to do so. It's like multi-tasking, you catch this ball while you throw this ball onto the air, etc.
Satisfying anime gifs - Album on Imgur
Anyways, we only not just juggle a ball but also a thin fancy piece of fabric where it has little tiny holes in it to prevent it from falling to the ground easily and you could catch it. We also had another juggling stuff like the Devil sticks where you try to catch the rubbery texture stick onto the 2 sticks you're holding. There's also a lot more, but I forgot what they were called. I wasn't a fan of juggling, but it was okay.

Table Tennis, the second sport that we're doing. If you don't know what it is, it's basically sort of like a Ping Pong where you have to verse someone and they'll be on the other side of the table. Then, you just tryna hit the small soft white ball and bounce it only once into your partner's table and vice versa.

Table tennis star, 12, 'unfairly' booted from team after coach ...Table Tennis was tough. I had no idea how to play it. During the first week, I practiced by versing the wall itself. The wall isn't moving or anything, it just bounces back to me and I have trouble catching it.
I think for a fact, I've missed the ball for almost 50+ times. But eventually, I got the hang of it. But, it doesn't mean I'm good at it. I still miss some shots, but it was sort of fun, even though I was bad at both sports.

What I could do better next time is to get to know the sport more, practice harder, and have resilience. Anyways, Bye! Have a nice day everyone!

Sustain Silent Reading 2

Hello again! I'll be posting another post about our Sustain Silent Reading (SSR) activity in Hurumanu 6. Here's my link to my first post so you'll get a better understanding of what I've been reading.

June 3, 2020 - Schooled by Gordon Korman
I'm currently on Chapter 3 of the book. Last week, I've read about Capricorn's grandmother Rain falls out of the Plumtree breaking her hips. Cap (Capricorn for short) had to bring her to a hospital by himself. Because Cap's parents abandoned him when he was young and was left with his grandmother in Garland farm, no one was gonna take care of him.

Cap was thirteen years old so he needed someone to look after him while her grandma is getting healed in the Hospital. Though her cranky grandma Rain refuses to stay at the hospital, she had no other choice but to heal herself first. Cap met Mrs. Donelly a woman who once also spend her childhood in Garland and knew his grandma Rain. Mrs. Donelly seems fishy for me though.
To be continued...

June 10, 2020 - Chapter 3-6
This week again we are doing SSR. The plot of this story is getting spicy. Cap being the odd one out, he's unfortunately targeted by the bullies (Zach and his minions). Mrs. Donelly wasn't fishy at all. She was trying her best to make her daughter Sophie to not being rude about him. Sophie has hated Cap's guts and is clearly showing it visibly.

There was also a new character Hugh Winkleman, the outcast nerd who used to be bullied. But now that Cap came to the school. He's now the new target replacing Hugh's position. He pitied Cap for it since they are starting to make fun of him such as spitball, and currently electing him for being the president when he didn't even sign up for it. Hugh felt bad for him and has clearly had the understanding what's going on but didn't have the guts to tell Cap. Because, if Cap isn't gonna be the target and then he will be just like in the old times, and he doesn't want it to happen. So he just chooses to stay silent and ignore it.

There's also a new character introduced. Naomi Erlanger. A girl who's willing to do anything to get her crush's attention which is Zach and to eventually be in a relationship with him. Even if it means, bullying Cap along with his friends. The thing is though, her bold best friend Lena, Zach has a crush on her friend. So she's basically doing anything to surpass her friend through Zach.

June 15, 2020 - Chapter 6
As Zach and Naomi trick Cap on being the president. He was forced to give a speech in the assembly as being elected as the 'president'. The next thing he said was bizarre. He thought he shouldn't be the president because he doesn't know anyone in the school. For what he believes, It's part of the president's job to learn all the student's name and there's like 200+ students in the school. Naomi felt sorry for him but she has to play along with Zach's plan as well as she wants to get Zach's heart.

June 17, 2020 - Chapter 6 - 7
The secret bullying continues as Cap being the 'President' of Grade 8th students in Claverage High School. Besides Zach and Naomi not telling him that he doesn't have to learn all the student's names to be the president. They also put some unpleasant things inside Cap's locker. There were some weird things but he didn't really put any reactions to it. But one of the things Naomi and Zach put in was a dead bird. Cap as a pure soul, he dug a small grave for the dead bird to put in and some Daisy flowers in it. Gathering some attention to other students.
Naomi felt somehow an emotion to him which she felt bad for him and liked the sensitive, pure sides of Capricorn. She joined him on the little funeral of the dead bird. Zach was sort of disappointed with her for getting her emotions took control of her.

June 22, 2020 - Chapter 7-8
As always, the book is all about Capricorn knowing some more cruel things outside Garland farm in which he grows up. He is also continuing to have a little crush on Sophie - Mrs. Donelly's 16-year-old daughter. Sophie would always get irritated with him and take things personally. As usual, Cap would get up early in the morning and do some martial arts stretching and Sophie emptied a bucket of water down to his head from upstairs. Mrs. Donelly was really sorry for him and he realized Sophie does really hate him. Also, Mrs. Donelly is finding out some things about what's happening at school with Capricorn, she felt really bad for him to deal with this.

June 24, 2020
Cap is discovering more unusual stuff outside Garland. He is getting more confuse on what is happening. Like this one, for example, people always throw spitballs at his fluffy curly long hair and he thought they are some sort of molecules that got into his hair because of how much paper there are in school. He discovered it every after school while he was brushing his hair. He also constantly misses Rain her grandma of course. He feels lost and unguided in the world. He also comes to the realization of why Rain moved to Garland from the city because it's a bunch of chaos etc. He also kept on getting some made-up love notes from Naomi and it sort of makes him feels crept out.

June 29, 2020
Cap is falling for Sophie more even though she's being mean towards him, he even started watching her favorite TV shows on the TV and he amused by it I guess. He has not seen a single TV on his life and it was a blast for him. His shoes were stolen so he had to go home barefoot and a bunch of yucky stuff stuck on his foot. On Sophie on the other hand she had a date with Josh. Josh was about to pick her up from her house when they both saw Cap looking like a homeless boy scrapping off his foot on whatever random stuff got stuck on his foot. Sophie was embarrassed to admit she lived with him so she said he was some random disgusting homeless guy. But eventually, she regretted saying it. Her date with Josh was a letdown. He talks about gaming for 3 hours so it was really boring.
