Home Chemistry - Crazy Crystals
Kia Ora! Today In Science, were making Crystals! We have 3 different choices of Crystals that we could make. These different crystals were Borax, Sugar, and Salt. My group and I are doing different crystals. I choose to do Salt, Shreya did Sugar one and Shalizeh and Risha did the Borax one.
Aim: To learn about a saturated solution and how to make crystals
Definition of the solution:
A liquid mixture, when something is dissolved into a liquid (eg: sugar in water)
Definition of saturated:
Having or holding as much as can be absorbed of something (when no more sugar or borax can be dissolved into the water)
In groups of three, you will make three different types of crystals and compare the results.
Salt Crystals
Ratio: 4 Tablespoons salt to 1/2 cup water
Materials
1) A cup
2) Pop stickle stick
3) Warm Water
4) Salt
5) String
6) Spoon for scooping salt
Process
Step 1: Grab a cup or glass.
Step 2: Fill it up with warm water.
Step 3: Get your spoon, and scoop 4 spoons of salt and put it inside the cup.
Step 4: Mix it together until there's no more salt underneath.
Step 5: Now, Get your Popstickle stick and your string, tie your string in the middle of your pop sickle stick.
Step 6: Dip your string to the water and while the popsicle stick is hanging at the top of the cup.
7) Leave it in several days (A week or so) and see what happened.

What crystals worked out best and why?:
The crystal that worked out in our group was the Salt crystal one, It's the only one that worked out. When I checked it out, there's only a few are attached to the string but, in the top of the popsicle stick, there are heaps, I don't know why this is happening but strange...

I think they'll all worked out ONLY if we were given more days not just 2 days to make these awesome cool crystals to form firmly into a beautiful shiny crystal.

Explain how the following crystals are formed?
Type

Salt
It starts with the sea water, then they put it in a pond. Next, the sun evaporates it and there! you have the salt.
Sugar
It starts from Sugar Cane, they cut it, Take the juice out and heat it up and it makes Syrup Crystallation also known as "Sugar".
Snowflakes
It starts in the sky, It's all about the cold temperature, the colder, the beautiful the snowflakes formed.
Hope you enjoyed this post and learned something new!
