The Amazing Forensic Science Experiments



Forensic Science

1. Write a definition of forensic science in your own words?

Forensic Science is a thing that they call where you can get evidence using that cool different technique.

2. What are the 5 different things that forensic scientists do?
    Look at the "What you will do" section on the careersnz website.
  1. Visit crime scenes to find evidence
  2. Take notes and draw sketches of crime scenes
  3. Analyse Physical evidence such as fibres, glass, debris, firearms, bullets, and marks made by tools and weapons.
  4. Identify drugs found on people, in the body, fluids.
  5. Analyse Biological evidence such as hair, blood and any other body fluids.


Fingerprints

Aim: To look at the different types of fingerprints.

Materials: 

  1. Ink Pad  
  2. Human Finger
  3. White Balloons

Steps

  1. Get all your materials  
  2.  Put your index finger to the Ink Pad for a couple of seconds.
  3. Then press your finger to the White balloon.   
  4.   Wait for a couple of seconds.
  5. Then Finally, let go and see what's your Index fingerprints looks like
  6. Now Dry it, If you think it's dry.
  7. Get your thumb finger, and press it on to the Ink Pad like what you did in your Index finger.  
  8. Do the same thing with the thumb finger
  9. Then dry both of the fingerprints
  10. After that, Blow the balloon and have a closer look in your fingerprints.

Hidden fingerprints:

Aim: To learn how to lift hidden fingerprints from an object.

1. Lifting and Gathering fingerprints.

Equipment:
  1.   Makeup Brush
  2.   Baby Powder
  3.   Human Finger
  4.   A transparent piece of tape
  5.   Black Paper 
  6.   Transparent Paper
Method: 
  1. Get all your materials 
  2. Press your finger to the transparent paper for a couple of seconds 
  3. Then get your Makeup brush and dip it to the Baby powder.
  4. Next, cover your fingerprint in the transparent paper using the makeup brush.
  5. Then get your transparent tape, and tape your fingerprints from the transparent paper.
  6. Unstick the tape from the transparent paper.
  7. Get your Black piece of paper, and stick the tape in the middle.
  8. And there you have it!

Did you manage to lift clear fingerprints?

Answer: Kinda

What could you do to improve your results next time?

Answer: Maybe press the finger longer to the transparent paper.

Why do you think fingerprints are useful to crime scene investigators?

Because from the fingerprints of the murderer, they can DNA it and find who was the murderer.
